Rose told the others she believed her husband was alive because it was all they’d understand. However, such was not the case.
She didn’t believe he was alive...she just didn’t know that he was dead.
The presence of faith and the lack of knowledge were separate entities...and Rose had no knowledge. She knew when something bad happened to Bernard...her own mother used to tell her that The Sight ran in the family...superstitious nonsense. It was just a matter of being with someone long enough that you kept a little of them with you for always. It was that little bit of Bernard in her that let her know if he was hurt...or worse.
Still...perhaps her momma’s chattering had a *little* bit of weight. After all, she’d known back in ‘83 when Bernard tripped on that curb and smashed his big toe all to hell...she’d even warned him not to go to that silly convention his partner Barry had dragged him to in Spokane. The second he took off in that plane, Rose went right out and bought a half dozen candy bars on her weekly shopping trip.
Soon as he got home, instead of an ‘I told you so’ she’d had those candy bars on hand while he was laid up...ready to pull out whenever he needed a little something special.
She'd known then...but she didn't know now. Wasn't a hard puzzle to solve...if she didn't know he was dead, then he had to be alive. Faith lay in knowing he was all right...haul and healthy somewhere, that he hadn't been badly hurt or, God forbid, taken.
Just because she didn’t know didn’t mean she had no faith...no, Rose believed God separated them for a reason, and she knew that He would bring them back together when the time came. All part of His divine plan and whatnot...her test of faith had been in believing that Bernard was safe.
But now she knew...without a doubt in her mind, she knew that he was alive, and not simply that he wasn't dead. He was alive and well, safe as could be...and he was coming home.
The candy bar was proof of that. God wouldn’t have put it in her hands if it weren’t meant for her husband.
After all, even *Bernard* knew she wasn’t much for chocolate.
